Cancel a subscription or contract by mail

Some companies make cancelling hard: a phone line nobody answers, a form you can't find, or a clause that requires written notice. A letter sent by registered mail leaves a dated record.

When a letter helps

Gym membership, phone plan, alarm system, insurance, a magazine or service subscription: many contracts let you end them by written notice.

If the company keeps billing you and says it received nothing, a registered letter shows the date your notice was sent and the date it was delivered.

What the letter usually includes

Your name and address, your customer or contract number, a clear sentence saying you are ending the contract, the date you want it to take effect, the date of the letter and your signature. Keep a copy.

Notice periods and cancellation fees depend on your contract and your province; provincial consumer protection offices publish guidance on cancelling many types of contracts. We print and mail your letter; we don't give legal advice.
