Send registered mail without going to the post office

When you need to show that a document was sent — and received — regular mail is not enough. Registered mail leaves a trail.

What registered mail gives you

A registered item produces two things regular mail does not: proof that you mailed the document on a given date, and proof that it was delivered.

That is why people use it when things might go wrong: a notice between a landlord and a tenant, a claim, a reply to an agency, a contract cancellation. If the other side says they never got anything, you have an answer.

How we handle it

  1. You upload the documentLike a regular order: file, print options, recipient's address.
  2. You choose “Registered”The surcharge is added to the total, shown before you pay.
  3. We print it and hand it in at the counterRegistered mail doesn't go in a mailbox: it is handed in at the post office counter, which records it.
  4. You get the proofThe tracking number is emailed to you, and the mailing receipt is kept.

The Canada Post counter or InkShip?

At the counter, you have to print the document, find an envelope, get to a post office during opening hours, wait in line, fill in the label and pay. It's the cheapest option if you have a printer and a post office nearby.

With InkShip, it all happens online in a few minutes, day or night, from any country. We print, put it in an envelope, hand it in at the counter and email you the tracking number. You pay to skip the trip.

Registered mail, Xpresspost or regular mail?

Regular mail is the cheapest, but it leaves no record: no tracking, no proof of delivery.

Registered mail adds a tracking number, a mailing receipt and a signature on delivery. It travels at the same pace as regular mail: you're buying proof, not speed.

Xpresspost is a faster Canada Post service, with tracking and an on-time delivery guarantee, signature being an option. Useful when time matters more than proof. InkShip doesn't offer it yet: we offer regular and registered mail.

Which documents?

Registered mail is for when you need to show a document was sent and that it arrived. Our guides cover the most common cases:

Before you choose this option

The rules on how a document must be sent vary by situation, province and type of proceeding. Some require a specific method, others set deadlines. We sell a printing and mailing service, not legal advice: check with the relevant source — the agency, the court or a professional — what applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does registered mail cost?

$24.99 CAD, plus printing and $5 to $9 postage depending on weight. A 5-page black-and-white letter comes to $31.24 CAD all in. Registered mail is available up to 50 sheets.

Do I get a tracking number?

Yes. It is emailed to you as soon as the item is handed in, and the receipt is kept.

What's the difference with regular mail?

Regular mail goes in a mailbox and leaves no trace. Registered mail is handed in at the counter, recorded, tracked, and proof of delivery is produced.

Does registered mail arrive faster?

No. Delivery time is the same, 3 to 7 business days. What you're buying is proof, not speed.

Does the recipient have to sign?

Yes. In Canada, registered mail is delivered against a signature, and online tracking shows the delivery.

What happens if the recipient isn't home?

Canada Post leaves a delivery notice and holds the item at the post office for pickup. If it isn't claimed, it comes back to InkShip's return address and we email you.

Can I send registered mail from abroad?

Yes. You order and pay from any country; the recipient has to be in Canada.
